Yellow crazy ants meet their match in taskforce

The Government welcomes the deployment of a taskforce by the Wet Tropics Management Authority’s Yellow Crazy Ant Eradication Program to treat by hand yellow crazy ant infestations along creek systems through the Cairns southern suburbs of Edmonton and Bentley Park into the foothills of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

The Authority will oversee many deployments over the next three years through their $7.5 million National Landcare Program project to control yellow crazy ants, with a view to eradication in the World Heritage Area.

The project is part of the Government’s $8.8 million election commitment to support yellow crazy ant and tramp ant control in Far North Queensland. The remaining $1.3 million is being delivered by Biosecurity Queensland to help build the skills and capacity of the community to manage invasive ant species including yellow crazy ants.
