An innovation expert says the Australian agriculture industry is helping lead the world in adapting to new technologies, but more work could be done.

Kate Cooper formerly worked for the UK government at Number 10 Downing Street leading their innovation strategy, and now works with one of Australia’s major banks.

Ms Cooper said Australia was in a unique position to capitalise on developments in agricultural technologies.

“Innovation in agriculture and agri-business is absolutely pivotal for Australia as an innovation nation,” she said.

“Nations that are really successful in terms of prosperity and growth are the ones who are able to innovate.

“One of the unique things about Australia is that we produce more food than we need to consume.

“Because of the position of power that gives us, and in an increasingly populated world, I really feel that we have the potential not just to see Australia as our paddock, but the world as our paddock.

“To export a lot of our innovations that we’ve tried and tested in our own country to really, really transform the agriculture sector globally – and that’s a real opportunity for us as a nation.”
