Matthew Tukaki and team in Canberra:
Days like this are rare for me … Friends I could not be prouder than i am right now of the work of so many in the suicide prevention sector, my team at Suicide Prevention Australia and the many Parliamentarians who joined us today. On this issue all Members of our Federal Parliament stand as one.
I can confirm the establishment of a $12 million national fund for suicide prevention – a National Research Action Plan – that will be able to empower and enable our research community to help us in our drive to reduce the rate of suicide across this great nation of ours. Today I joined with my CEO Sue Murray, the Minister for Health Greg Hunt, MPs Julian Lesser and Julie Collins at Parliament when the announcement came through.
I remember launching the National Research Action plan with former Minister for Health Sussan Ley several years ago at our nations Parliament and while there is still a way to go to get the framework bedded down our ability to start and start in earnest has arrived.
Thank you to all of those involved in this journey and to those who will no doubt join. And, of course this is but one of a number of pillars we need to ensure that every Australian counts in this journey no matter your gender, background, the color of your skin, the nature of the people you love – to me each of you matters and I thank you for your support of our sector and those who work in it.
